When storing things, whether it's in a garage or a basement or off-site, I recommend using clear water/critter-proof bins that stack easily.
I typically label them on a couple sides; you can do this with painters' tape and a sharpie, or you can tape pieces of printer paper on the inside of the box.
They actually make post-it notes that are sticky all over and those work great too, and can look a little more polished:
(There’s also post-it tape that comes in rolls of 1” or 2” that you can cut to size)
I default to these 66qt Sterilite bins, and I use these studier air-tight ones for special items or tougher conditions (like a dusty storage unit with heavy items and a fair amount of stacking).
The heavy duty ones have more clips than I need and they’re sort of loud, so I often leave them unclipped or remove some of the clips for the bins that I regularly access. They’re also more expensive, so I stock up during holiday sales; they’re often carried at Walmart and Costco in various sizes. If they’re being shipped, they may arrive with cracked lids, so it’s convenient to buy them from a store where you can do in-person returns.
I have come to really like the ones with the same footprint but half-deep for organizing things that I use more frequently and I use smaller sizes for office supplies and other things that are easier to keep separated.
I have a 30qt iris bin that I keep my snack staples in when I travel by car, and that’s been really convenient.
I’m now testing out this very reasonably priced bin set from sterilite that has some organization built in. My first application is for my Advice: Car bin for longer trips but it also seems like it could be good for some of my first aid supplies (which I generally break down by type of issue: colds/sinus vs. cuts/scrapes vs. digestive problems vs. sprains/strains, etc.).
