Advice: Car bin for longer trips

Beyond the bare basics, or seasonal necessities (see my 🤔Winter tips), don't store stuff in your car. Instead, make a clear plastic bin with everything you’ll need for road trips, and only put it in the car when you go on an adventure.

The best part is having a bunch of useful things with you, but there are other side benefits:

  1. You can easily decide to take a different car and still have all the basics with you.
  2. Your car will be less likely to be broken into.
  3. Things like snacks and medicines won’t bake in your hot car for months.

Also, before pulling out, spend 1-2 minutes sitting in the car thinking about anything you forgot (e.g. a wine bottle opener or leaving a spare key for the person feeding the cat).

‣
Here are the things in my car bin:
Binoculars (🔬Pocket microscope & binoculars)
Sunscreen (😎The Best Sunscreen (for people who hate sunscreen))
Sunglasses
Arm sleeve (sun protection for your driving arm—can just cut an old sleeve off of a dress shirt)
Quick/easy calories
Headlamp
Wet wipes (e.g. Burt’s Bees)
Kleenex (I’m brand-loyal on this one)
These slim wallet 10 packs (best deal at Target) are nicer than the brick-like pocket packs, both for tucking into a pocket or bag, and for easily getting a tissue out.
Hand sanitizer
Caffeine (they make caffeinated clif bars and pills and such)
Various charging cables/power banks + usb converter for the cigarette lighter port
Bug spray
Mosquito bite relief (♨️Mosquito bite relief: a tiny heater)
Heat packs/hand warmers
Bluetooth speaker
Luci inflatable solar light (the "color" one) (💡Luci solar light)
Multitool (w/ knife and bottle-opener)
Minimal medicine cabinet: pepto bismol/tums, antihistamine, pain killers, etc.
N95s (2)
Chapstick & hand lotion

I separate things by use-case and put like items in these little clear organizational boxes with washi tape labels:

IRIS USA Pencil Case Box Storage Container for Organizing with Snap Lid, 10-Pack, Big Capacity Stackable Plastic Pen Pouch for Craft Hobby Art Supplies Journaling Stationery Sticker, Clear, Small

I also now have a separate “snack bag” tote that also lives by the door and has things like meat sticks and potato chips and almond butter cups and fruit leathers and water.

(I’m now testing out this bin from Target—it has some organization built in and is only $6! — update: I’m using one for battery organization and one for organizing all my travel containers, but I have not adopted it for my car bin)
