If you aren't going all in on automated lights, there are still ways to easily control your existing lamps. With a foot dimmer (which you could also adjust with your hands—I have a tabletop version on my bedside table), you don't have to fumble around for the switch on the lamp itself to turn it on, you can even put the lamp in a hard-to-reach spot, and you have a lot more room to make adjustments (even if it was originally a 3-way fixture).
I also use this for strings of Christmas tree lights.
My favorite bulb to use on dimmer switches (especially in bedrooms) has a really wide dimming range and actually becomes warmer in tone as I dim (but even the brightest setting is a nice standard warm white color).
