Humans of New York

A guy who does street photography portraits, but really captures people's stories more impressively than their images.

I first discovered it through fb and encourage people to follow the page to get a smattering of stories in their feed. (I left social media a few years ago and this is one of the things I miss—if you have access to your parent’s accounts, it might be worth adding, to give them a little glimpse into a place with a really positive community.)

Humans of New York

"The football coach at my college opened his training program to any athlete who wanted to join-- even women. I was captain of the volleyball team, so I decided to give it a try. The program was military style. We woke up at 5 AM. And Coach Brooks himself was a very intimidating man.

📕 He has also published a number of books — I would personally recommend skipping the first one that's mostly photos. My guess is that in the beginning he didn’t realise how important the stories were, or that he was doing something special in drawing them out of people.

Brandon Stanton | Photographer & Author

Brandon Stanton is the writer and photographer behind Humans of New York, an online storytelling project with thirty-million followers on social media. Called ‘one of the most important art projects of the decade’ by The Washington Post, Humans of New York inspired thousands of similar projects around the world and is credited with sparking a storytelling movement centered on the lives of ordinary people. Stanton is also the creator of Dear New York, a two-week immersive art installation staged in NYC’s Grand Central Station, described as the largest public work of the last two decades.

Related type of good Facebook object for women’s college grads:

an outrageously positive and supportive women’s college alumnae fb group. HONY, but for a different demographic. Mostly just women asking for help and/or offering connection, jobs, advice, etc. https://www.facebook.com/groups/wcantogether
